CC Theatre Project For Texas School Districts

Cisco College Theatre Department presents community service project to Texas school districts

CISCO, Texas – The Cisco College Theatre Department has initiated a community service project in the form of a play that provides Texas school districts with a training program that helps them comply with House Bill 1041 (The Texas Jenna Law), effective Sept. 1, 2009. House Bill 1041 requires school districts to provide training for teachers, students and parents on the subject of sexual child abuse.

The play, The Bubbylonian Encounter, is designed to teach children about “good touch” and “bad touch.” The program incorporates teacher training by counselors, the presentation of the play and discussion with the children after they have seen the play.

“The play helps to initiate straightforward, open, honest communication about inappropriate sexual touch,” said Billy Smith, director of performing arts at Cisco College.

The college will perform the play for counselors at the Fort Worth Independent School District on Apr. 19 and will perform for their elementary students at a later date. The play has already been performed for Winters ISD students.

In the early 1980s, Smith, then director of theatre at Western Wyoming College, was approached by the area child protection council to first perform the play. He attended training on the issue of sexual abuse, and college students performed the play as a service learning project throughout the United States, including Wyoming, Nebraska and Michigan.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 53 percent of sexual child abuse occurs before age 12, and 51 percent of the victims are white. Sexual abuse victims are also more likely to have problems with substance abuse, inappropriate sexual behavior and close relationships.

The play has been locally endorsed by Taylor County Child Advocacy Center, Winters ISD, Representative Jim Keffer and Abilene ISD.
