The 2010 Texas Teen-Age Baseball Association State Tournament last week brought a torrent of excitement to Eastland County, where teams and fans as distant as Athens and Presidio jammed businesses and baseball stands in Eastland and Cisco.
The Cisco team in the Junior Boys Division created more than their share of excitement as they climbed to a fourth-place finish, coached by Doug Witt and Kevin Reed and assisted by Jade Reed.
This was the team that, in the final tense moments of their first game Monday night, showed resiliency and poise in a come-from-behind-win against the strong Brownwood Rangers.
That same night, cool temperatures aided players and spectators alike, but a drenching downpour the second evening caught the Cisco youth behind on their home field. That cost Cisco an early loss against the Anson Tigers-Red.
Wednesday night brought the Cisco team back to their home field for a hard-fought game against the Athens Yankees. They pocketed a win that advanced them to Thursday evening’s tough slog against the Eastland Reds, played out at the Eastland baseball complex. Here again the black-and-white team prevailed.
Friday found the young men matching bats with Hawley’s Bearcats in broiling midday heat. Enduring that test, they returned to the field just hours later. Once again they found themselves face to face with the Anson Tigers-Red.
The tiring Cisco team struggled to maintain its momentum, but went down to its second defeat of the tournament.
It is worth noting that, amid teams often hailing from larger districts and maintaining older rosters, the Cisco Junior Boys placed fourth of fourteen teams in the 2010 Texas Teen-Age Baseball Association State Tournament.
We thank James Norris, Eastland Youth Baseball, and all who made the 2010 tournament a success. We congratulate the Cisco youth on their outstanding achievement.
