Denver L. Nelms, age 91 of Breckenridge, died Saturday, December 11, 2010, at Stephens Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 15th, at Morehart Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Jason Martin officiating. Private interment will follow in the Caddo Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be held Tuesday afternoon, December 14th, from 4 to 5 p.m.
Denver Lee Nelms was born on February 16, 1919 in the Dodson Prairie Community of Palo Pinto County. He graduated from Caddo High School and married Gena Elizabeth Stallings on December 25, 1937 in Breckenridge. During WWII, he was stationed in both Korea and the Philippines, where he served as a technical sergeant. For 27 years, Denver worked as the parts manager for Graham Motor Company. Later he and Gena purchased Gateway to P.K., later known as Caddo Mercantile, and operated the general store from 1961 to 1982. Mr. Nelms was also instrumental in forming the Stephens County Rural Water District, in which he served as both inspector and meter reader for several years. He was a member of the Caddo Baptist Church and later the First Baptist Church of Breckenridge. Denver was a member of the VFW Post No. 7767 and enjoyed fishing, hunting and spectator sports. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister, Grace Floyd.
Denver is survived by two sons, Ronnie Nelms and wife, Shirley of Breckenridge and Kenneth Nelms and wife, Theresa of Pottsboro; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
