In the fall of 2009 Eastland was chosen by the Texas Historic Commission to participate in the 2010 Visionaries in Preservations program which provides cities with the opportunity to plan for the future and implement revitalization projects. Nine meetings were held over the past eight months and members of the community attended these meetings to map out a plan for the future of Eastland, TX. The celebration Tuesday night was the culmination of those meetings and the presentation of the final plan from the Texas Historic Commission to Eastland’s Mayor Mark Pipkin.
[singlepic id=1968 w=320 h=240 float=left]The Dyess Air Force Base Honor Guard started the evening off with a flag ceremony. Eastland native Garrett Webb, who has had three tours of duty in Iraq, led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mayor Mark Pipkin welcomed everyone and then introduced State Representative Jim Keffer. Rep. Keffer spoke of the struggles of the rural communities and how much Eastland has accomplished. He then presented Mayor Pipkin with an official recognition from Governor Rick Perry to the Eastland Visionaries and Preservation leadership committee for their contribution in ensuring the historic preservation efforts of the Texas Historical Commission.
[singlepic id=1986 w=320 h=240 float=right]Eastland graced the cover of this month’s Texas Highways Magazine and the Majestic Theater was featured in their True, TX article. Charles Lohrmann, editor for Texas Highways was a guest speaker explaining how they came about the idea of creating the fictional town True, TX. He brought poster sized images of the front cover and the Majestic Theater picture featured inside the magazine.
Ann Zoellick, Vice President of the Eastland Historic Preservation Committee introduced the other members as Chairman Dean Vernon, Terry Simmons, Jeannie Griffin, Ed Allcorn, Bill Dolen and Ron Holliday.
Terry Colley, Deputy Executive Director of the Texas Historical Commission, presented Mayor Pipkin with the first official copy of Eastland’s Visionaries in Preservation Historic Preservation Action Plan.
An assortment of delicious hors d’oeuvres and refreshments were created and displayed by Francie’s Fountain and Deli.
