The 3rd and 4th grade Gordon Longhorns fulfilled their quest to win the state title in the Texas Six Man Pee Wee Assoc. by defeating the South Division Champion Cherokee Indians by a score of 26-14. The Longhorns ended the season undefeated and outscored all their opponents 244-32. Coach Kirby Wigington is quoted “These boys put their heart and soul into every workout, since August 3rd. I am extremely proud of the boys. They had a goal at the 1st practice to win the state title and now they have done that over a very good Cherokee team.” Coach Wigington goes on to say “It is an honor to coach these kids. They don’t have any quit in them. Even if it was hot, raining, humid or cold they put forth 100 percent and it has paid off because they are champions.”
The game was scoreless at the end of the first quarter with both teams having good defensive stands. In the second quarter the Longhorn offense began to wear down the Cherokee defense. The Longhorns drove down to the Indian one yard line when Colt Mallory blasted through the line for a Longhorn score. The Longhorns kicked off and held on four consecutive downs. They got the ball back when Blu Caylor took the pitch from Zane Allen and galloped into the end zone for the second Longhorn score just before the half making the score 12-0. When the second half began, Gordon’s Zane Allen received the kick off and took it back all the way for a touchdown. Chase Crider added the extra point making the score 20-0. Gordon kicked off to Cherokee who also returned the kick back for a touchdown which brought the game to 20-8. Gordon added another score in the fourth quarter when Zane Allen completed a slant pass to Blu Caylor from the Cherokee 25 yard line bringing the score to 26-8. The final Score of the game came with seven seconds remaining on the clock when Cherokee scored as time expired. The Gordon Longhorns became the Texas Six Man Pee Wee Assoc. State Champion with the final score of 26-14.
