Hilburn Carter “Pappy” Roberts, age 90, passed from this life Tuesday August 11, 2009 at his home, in Eastland surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM Friday, August 14, 2009 at Daugherty Street Church of Christ in Eastland with grandsons, Keith Hudgins, Steven Roberts, and Todd Roberts officiating. Graveside services were held at 4:00 PM Friday, in Lamesa Memorial Park with Mark Hackett officiating. Services are held under the direction of the Summers-Bakker Funeral Home.
Hilburn was born June 18, 1919 in Dawson County to Benjamin Franklin and Annie (Carter) Roberts. He attended school in Lamesa. He met his wife, Fern Strickland, at a baseball game in the Key Community of Dawson County in 1938. They were married December 19, 1940 in Lamesa after having spent much of their courtship time horseback riding, she on the horse she rode to school. He did not grow up in a traditional home, but provided a loving, Christian home for his children, Ann, Jerry, and Larry.
Hilburn began a farming career in Lynn County then in 1947 moved his family to Lamesa and began working for Dee Adcock Farms, where he worked until his retirement in 1989.
Hilburn was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Lamesa and served as an Elder for fifteen years. In 2002, GG and Pappy moved to Eastland where they enjoyed their new Christian family at the Daugherty St. Church of Christ. Most of his social life for the past two years was his friendships and associations with the staff at The Christian Service Center.
He is survived by his wife, Fern “GG”, of Eastland; a daughter Ann Hudgins and husband Manley of Sweetwater; two sons, Jerry Roberts and wife Joyce of Lubbock and Larry Roberts and wife Quay of Eastland; five grandchildren,
Rhonda Weirden, Steven Roberts, Todd Roberts, Keith Hudgins, and Tanette Romberger; eleven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; and his sister Lois McCloskey and her husband, Mack of Amarillo.
Memorial donations may be made in Hilburn “Pappy” Roberts’ name to the Children’s Home of Lubbock, Foster’s Home for Children in Stephenville, or to Lighthouse Hospice in Eastland.
