Through an effort to combine and use the variety of resources available through state and federally funded programs, Eastland ISD has made a huge leap toward the 21st Century Classroom. With budgets tight and administrators across the state having to cut back on personnel, Eastland ISD has made a concerted effort to find other ways to finance technology upgrades for the classrooms in Eastland ISD. Siebert Elementary is finalizing their Vision 2020, Cycle 1 grant which provided $488,716 to put interactive whiteboards, student response devices, teacher laptops, student laptops, and ceiling mounted LCD projectors into all 4th and 5th grade classrooms. Eastland Middle School is finishing up year one of a two year Vision 2020, Cycle 2 grant that provided $500,000 to the district for interactive whiteboards, ceiling mounted LCD projectors, student (5 per classroom) and teacher Mobis, document cameras, teacher laptops, and student laptops for grades 6, 7, and 8. Funds from both grants provide 25% of the total amount for teacher professional development to learn how to use all the new technology as well as software programs that help integrate the general curriculum with technology. Eastland ISD is also participating in 2 Rus 3 Grants, one in conjunction with Region 14 Educational Service Center (ESC 14) and one with Ranger College. The ESC 14 grant will provide an interactive learning system that can be used for staff members to receive professional development on high definition equipment where they can watch and interact with the presenter without leaving Eastland. The equipment is also ear marked for students to participate in learning activities where they are able to interact with students in classrooms from all over the World. This system will be installed at Eastland Middle School. The Ranger College grant will provide a top-of-the-line interactive learning system from Tandberg Technologies called The Scholar. This system will provide a learning system in which Eastland ISD can receive and send high definition courses right from a classroom at the high school. Students will have access to courses from the college just as if they are sitting in the classroom on the college campus. Also, Eastland ISD sends courses to other districts that do not have a teacher for certain hard to fill positions such as Spanish. To recap the technology infusion occurring at Eastland ISD, 100% of classrooms currently have interactive whiteboards and documents cameras. 100% of classrooms at Siebert Elementary and Eastland High School currently have ceiling mounted LCD projectors, with 100% of Eastland Middle School classrooms scheduled for installation in late May. At Siebert Elementary and Eastland Middle School, 100% of teachers have laptops with Eastland High School teachers scheduled to receive theirs in September. For the 2010-2011 school year, all students in grades 4-8 will have use of school issued laptops. Just a reminder to the parents of students in grades 4-8 to complete your parent surveys on the Vision 2020 grants. The surveys are a short 20 questions and school personnel are available to assist in completing the surveys. Eastland Middle School has one more open lab night on May 17th where parents can stop by between 3:30-5:30 and complete the online survey. Siebert Elementary will have open lab nights on May 13th and 19th from 3:30-5:30 for parents of students in grades 4th & 5th to complete their surveys. District personnel are working on other grant and funding opportunities to provide the premier educational opportunities the community of Eastland has come to expect.
